Tall People Sleep Longer in Bed

'Tall People Sleep Longer In Bed'
[2015-2016]

'Do You Have This In A Larger Size?' [2016]
(top left)
Acrylic paint on canvas and onto wall surface above canvas. 177.8cm x 98.35cm

The stretcher for the canvas was constructed to be the same height as the average height for a male; 177.8cm or 5 feet, 10 inches. The black line that runs up the canvas and onto the wall above is 196.7cm or 6 feet, 6 inches, the same height as me. The idea was to represent how someone of a similar height will struggle to find things (clothes for example) in their size.

'Above Average' [2015]
(top right)
Acrylic paint on canvas. 197.6cm by 98.35cm.

At 197.6cm, the stretcher and by extension the canvas are the same height as me. The area that is painted in black acrylic paint covers the canvas up to the measurement for the average height for a male, at 177.8cm. So what you see is a collection of measurements comparing someone of average height against me.

Household paint on canvas. 197.6cm by 98.35cm.

A development of the previous painting, 'Above Average,' trialling a new material; household paint.

'Adam Inglis vs. The Average Man' [2016]
Acrylic paint on canvas. 2.1m x 2.1m

My parents have kept a record of graphs and charts that plot my height and weight that correspond to my age at the time. I have subsequently taken this information and translated into a painting. The scale of this painting was determined by two factors; accurate measurements of height on the y axis and allocation of 10cm for every year I have existed along the x axis (being 21 years old at the time).
It would have been feasible to make the painting smaller but I felt it was important to display the measurements of height correctly and accurately.

By plotting the measurements that my parents recorded, the line that borders the top of the grey area is formed. As you can see there is a good mix of areas of fast and slow growth (the latter is more evident in later years).

Overlapping the grey area is an area of black paint. The line forming the top of this area is created by plotting the corresponding measurements for someone of average height. I collected these by researching the average height for a male at every year group. The result of this is a very large scale graph documenting the differences in height and growth between someone of average height and me, Adam Inglis.
